Full Review

The HP Elitebook 820 convinces me with its light and handy appearance. Instead of a metal construction, it uses mainly a magnesium chassis which may give the Laptop a cheaper look and feel, however, switching to magnesium reduces the weight significantly to 1.3kg (2.9lbs). With some of the previous Hp EliteBook models, it felt more like holding a brick but this new model is a featherweight by comparison.

At the same time, the HP 820 G2 is still a very robust Laptop. The HP Elitebooks undergo over 115,000 hours of testing and are certified to the MIL-STD 810G rating which means the one or the other drop shouldn’t hurt the Laptop too much. The Chiclet keyboard is splash-proof, which is appealing as it can be very handy in a working or home environment. The keys feel very smooth and easy to use and the spacing between the keys is big enough to avoid typos. Overall this model delivers a well-made, easy to use suitable keyboard.

The performance of the Laptop certainly satisfied my expectations. The model I am using comes with 8GB Ram and an SSD Storage which massively affects the speed of the Laptop. The downside of the SSD is that it comes with only 240GB which means using Cloud Systems or external storage is essential for large files. Of course, you can decide to upgrade your Laptop to a larger Solid State Drive but can be quite a jump on the price.

The Hp EliteBook 820 G2 comes featured with a 5th Generation Intel Core i5 Processor which is a great solution if you are a rather impatient Laptop user. The Intel Core i5-5200series is among the most popular chips and is classified as a mid-range CPU. Compared to the previous version it demonstrated a much better power efficacy and overall better performance-per-watt ratio. It has a PassMark benchmark score of roughly 3,600 points and can handle higher demanding applications. The Laptop comes with Windows 10 pre-installed and while personally, I wasn’t very convinced of the previous Windows versions,  I think with Windows 10, Microsoft really made a big jump towards user-friendliness.

With a 12.5” MATTE screen and a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (HD), the display is very useful when it comes to using the Laptop outside, on the train or in places where you can’t provide perfect lighting conditions. I am reasonably happy with its brightness settings when using the laptop outside and the MATTE screen certainly assists in that environment.

The two big plus points of this model is its connectivity. You find ports on this Laptop which aren’t usually included on thin Laptops like this one. From three USB 3.0 ports to Ethernet, VGA, DisplayPort, a multi SD card reader and a side docking port. There is not much you could miss, though you should be aware that this model has no HDMI Port, rather it has a DisplayPort which is as good as an HDMI Connection but less popular with the consumer-facing customers. If you need an HDMI connection, you can easily buy a DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter.

The second strength, as mentioned before is the lightweight, easily portable robust build. For someone looking for a mid to high powered laptop which is thin, light and robust this certainly is very attractive.

The Hp Elitebook 820 G2 is a mixture between a robust multifunctionality and a handy light Ultrabook. Because of its extensive connectivity and ability to easily change and upgrade, it is a great asset in an office environment but at the same time very portable and good for private use. The specifications are more than enough for a speedy day to day use however if you want to go beyond that, you could go for the upgraded HP EliteBook 820 which comes with an i7 processor. All in all, the laptop is a great lightweight, portable, yet robust laptop.
